Giving the Gift of Knowledge: Essential Skin of Color Dermatology Reads for Trainees

Introducing a new SOCS initiative: The President’s Book Club. This educational program seeks to enrich the education of dermatology trainees by facilitating free access to seminal scientific/medical literature recommended by the SOCS President.

Each year, one book may be selected by the current SOCS President to be distributed to Dermatology Program Directors across the United States, and, subject to the availability of funds, Canada.

SOCS members who have authored, co-authored, edited or co-edited a significant work in the field of dermatology related to skin of color are encouraged to apply for their publication to be considered in the inaugural offering of the President’s Book Club.

Please review the information below before submitting your application.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants must be a SOCS member in good standing.
  • The author(s) must commit to securing financial support to cover the costs associated with the purchase and distribution of their book along with any administrative expenses SOCS incurs; while SOCS may assist in this endeavor it is ultimately the author's responsibility. 'Financial support' should include:
    • Funding to cover the distribution of the publication to one to three years of residents. Dermatology fellows can also be considered if funding is available.
    • Administrative costs incurred by SOCS staff.
  • SOCS members who have authored, co-authored, edited or co-edited a ‘significant work’ in the field of dermatology related to skin of color. ‘Significant work’ in dermatology related to skin of color would be one that:
    • is impactful,
    • introduces new knowledge or approaches,
    • is relevant and useful to its field,
    • and demonstrates scholarly merit.
  • The book must focus on dermatological issues, treatments, historical perspectives, mentorship, leadership, or advancements specific to the specialty of skin of color dermatology.
  • The book should have been published within the last three years to ensure relevance and updated content.

Review Process and Notification:

All applications will undergo a thorough evaluation process, which will include review by the SOCS President and may also include review by the Physician Education Committee. Applicants will be notified of the book selection decision by June 17, 2024. Applications not selected for the 2024 cycle are welcome to resubmit in future years.
