Dr. Valerie D. Callender is an internationally recognized Board-Certified Dermatologist who is known for her sensitive, caring, and cutting-edge approach to the management of hair loss in women and the treatment of pigmentation disorders across all skin types. Dr. Callender has held leadership positions across a wide spectrum of dermatological organizations, including serving as President of American Dermatological Association, the Women’s Dermatologic Society (WDS), the Skin of Color Society and the National Medical Association’s Dermatology Section. She has also served on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), where she was a member of the Executive Committee and is the current President of the American Acne & Rosacea Society. Dr. Callender has a deep and enduring commitment to Dermatology and has made significant contributions to the science of Dermatology, where she has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, 28 textbook chapters, edited 2 textbooks and participated in over 60 clinical trials. Dr Callender is frequently invited by her colleagues, both nationally and internationally to share her expertise, and has made 354 presentations in the United States and around the world. She is the Founder and Medical Director of the Callender Dermatology & Cosmetic Center and Callender Center for Clinical Research, which are both located in the Washington, DC metropolitan region. Dr. Callender received her medical degree from Howard University, where she also did her residency and currently serves as Professor of Dermatology at the College of Medicine. She is the recipient of several Dermatology awards and AAD Presidential citations, including the Rose Hirschler Award and Mentor of the Year Award, given by the WDS, and the Clark Finnerud Award given by the Dermatology Foundation. Dr. Callender is passionate and committed to maintaining excellence in Dermatology and devotes her free time to mentoring aspiring medical students, residents and young dermatologists.
