Meet our Keynote Speakers: "Historical Perspectives on Henrietta Lacks," presented by representatives from the Henrietta Lacks Family!

With great anticipation, we are thrilled to feature our keynote speakers for our first-ever “Meeting the Challenge” Summit, two descendants of Henrietta Lacks and passionate patient rights advocates, David Lacks, Jr., her grandson, and Veronica Robinson, her great-granddaughter.

As told in the global bestseller, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot, Henrietta Lacks was a Black woman whose cells were harvested without her consent to create vaccines for diseases ranging from polio to HPV. David Lacks, Jr. and Veronica Robinson have traveled around the US telling Henrietta's story and advocate for bioethics policies and medical consent laws. Lacks and Robinson represent their family on a panel at the National Institute for Health (NIH) that reviews applications for the use of HeLa cells in research.

David Lacks, Jr. is the grandson of Henrietta Lacks and the son of David “Sonny” Lacks. David has a degree in computer information systems and has traveled around the United States and Canada setting up computer systems and labs for companies and educational institutions. He also lends his talent to the Lacks family’s website. David is honored to serve on the National Institutes of Health panel, where he reviews proposals from researchers seeking to use the HeLa genome in their research.

Veronica Robinson is a patient rights advocate who speaks on Henrietta Lacks’ legacy, their family’s experience in biomedical research, impact on participation, and ethics in this modern era of precision medicine.
